2+1 ADU

2+1 ADU or Carlsbad ADU is a space uniquely designed for two families. The owners wanted their parents to live in separate yet connected living spaces, so a simple pitch roof covers both spaces, but it shapes the interior with asymmetrical and individual ceilings to create two warm and comfortable living spaces. The exterior roof projects as a cantilever taking advantage of the sloped topography, creating a fantastic view of the local mountain and providing shade. In the interior, the kitchen cabinets adapt to the wood slats ceiling shape and create extra storage space.

The plan locates the “wet rooms,” such as the kitchens and restrooms, in the middle to reduce plumbing. The mechanical units are above these areas for more sustainable distribution, with registers through the kitchen cabinets. Water from the ADU’s showers and washer is recycled in the crawl space to water the garden.
