Our client purchased the penthouse apartment in the Refinery Building, a new luxury
apartment building in the Strip District, to serve as their Pittsburgh pied-à-terre. After moving in
some of their existing furniture they contacted us for interior design services. They wanted the
space to feel more inviting, reflect their taste, and include a workspace where the wife can
write the book she was developing. They asked that the design establish a continuity within the
open floor plan and complement the adjoining bedrooms
The scope of work included a built-in desk, bar cabinet, wide wood paneling above the kitchen
cabinets, rugs, new furnishings, reupholstery, wall and window treatments.
From the start our clients told us they love color, warm tones, natural materials, and anything
having to do with animals. With this in mind we wrapped the living space in a warm beige grass
cloth wallpaper which is a nice backdrop for their art collection and catches the sun light
beautifully.
The built-in cabinet was custom made by a local millworker. It has a walnut desk top, a charging
station in the drawer, and a pull-out shelf in the base cabinet for a printer. The navy blue at the
back of the cabinet is echoed throughout the space and on the kitchen island. The walnut bar
cabinet is our design inspired by a Jean Prouve suspended cabinet. It has open shelves to
display her glassware collection. It is perpendicular to a wall of windows which overlook
Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District and beautiful downtown.
The furnishings are a mix of new pieces blended with modern and vintage styles. Wherever
possible we played with patterns, color and texture to add energy and pop. The pair of wood
framed chairs in the living room were recovered in a soft sage fabric and the sofa throw pillows
are custom. The desk chair is the Panton chair which adds a sculptural element and is also very
comfortable. In the guest bedroom the client wanted to keep things playful, so we used red
enamel stools for bedside tables with wall mounted reading lights. The animal theme is
continued in the artwork.
