For this 19 years old condominium redesign, we proposed to maintain a roomier living hall (the partition walls segregating a 3rd bedroom was previously torn down by the previous owner when they purchased the unit) yet plan for a space for the home owners to work at home.
After several rounds of discussion on whether to rebuild partition walls or collapsible glass doors to recreate another room for that purpose, the final decision was finally made to maintain the existing open plan layout for the living/ dining areas to retain the spaciousness, and to create a more flexible workstation which can be concealed by sliding doors when not in use. On the sides, additional concealed storage space - another core requirement - is integrated.
When we first visited the unit, the irregular shape of the rooms inspired us to create a look which is more ‘organic’. Given that most homes in Singapore are very regular rectangular boxes, we thought this ‘formless-ness’ is both challenging and interesting. Adding soft curves and rounded details in our design, complete with lime wash finishes, complements the shape very well and results in a soft and ethereal ambiance once the lights are on.
The remodelling also saw a massive revamp of both of the bathrooms and kitchen. In the latter, we carved the floor plan into different sections according to the usage, and looked at maximising each individual pocket of space to cater to storage requirements. To keep to the idea of keeping spaces as open as possible, the 2 kitchens can be partitioned or ‘combined’ as one large cooking area depending on the owners’ needs via sliding pocket glass doors.
