Award-Winning, Stunning Mid-Century Mod Home

The dining room shown here opens to the foyer and living room, all while looking onto the nicely landscaped yard. The white canvas walls and neutral furniture called for dynamic art in this dining room and the bold front door.

This home, built in 1981, promised good structure and a great location in Houston, but craved an updated look. The architect, interior designer, builder and landscaper collaborated on an extensive renovation and second story addition to reveal a modern home with European flair that the entire family can enjoy.

The original kitchen was relocated to better serve its new family and work with an open floor plan. The now hip family kitchen with European-like details uses plumbing and lighting with clean lines upon a white canvas. The large island allows the family to prepare many meals at home. Top-of-the-line appliances, terrazzo-style tile, Thermador appliances and modern white cabinets were also incorporated.

Just off the dining room and foyer, the living area uses neutral colors in the furnishings to accommodate the needs of children and a dog. Pops of color are introduced in the accent pillows and modern art. The lighting fixtures continue the modern look with clean, simple lines. The wide windows along one side welcome in natural light and overlook the covered patio and garden.

The home office makes great use of often wasted space under the stairs and carries on the European style.

A stylish, well-traveled couple recently completed a home renovation and second-story addition in the Southgate area of Houston. The couple has two boys and a dog, which played into many of the design considerations. They moved back to Houston at the end of 2016, having lived in Amsterdam for 10 years. While there, they remodeled a townhome. Living in The Netherlands increased their appreciation for clean, sleek design, especially in plumbing and cabinetry. The couple loves Mid-Century Modern design and has a collection of original pieces and furnishings that served as a jumping off point for the design concept. Having found a 1981 single-story home in Southgate with a distinctly mod vibe, they hired Greg Swedberg with 2Scale Architects to design and complete the renovation and second-floor addition. They engaged Pamela O’Brien with Pamela Hope Designs to provide design guidance in everything from material selections to furnishings. They chose Stephen Heiman of Steven Allen Designs for the construction.
