Baymiller Renovation

From Hayes Shanesy
While on walks near his woodshop designer and cabinetmaker Hayes Shanesy dreamed of owning one of the historic homes in the Dayton Street historic district in Cincinnati, Ohio. After years of legal work and help from the city Hayes bought an abandoned 1882 Italianate home that had been vacant for years. It needed a complete renovation from structural work, mechanicals and everything in between. As owners of Brush Factory (furniture previously featured in multiple Dwell issues) the husband and wife team began designing and tackling almost all the construction work themselves. The design included removing some interior masonry walls, matching and remaking historic millwork and custom casework in nearly every room. Hayes' father a retired master cabinetmaker disassembled the entire staircase, turned replacement balusters and repaired broken newel posts on their lathe. After several years of blood sweat and tears their vision was complete and they moved in at the end of 2019. In 2020 the couple had there wedding ceremony on the deck Hayes built on Christmas Eve at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and in 2021 they had a baby daughter. The house is now listed for sale as the couple looks for a new project!
