The architectural design for this home stemmed from a family vacation to California. The clients wanted to utilize the exterior of the home as much as the interior and still be able to enjoy these spaces once the Texas summer comes into full play.
Designed as the client's "forever home" — as the kids leave the nest, the house functions as a single story for the couple’s everyday needs. The open floor plan allows for larger family gatherings. When weather permits, the den doors slide open allowing for the rooms to become one simultaneously.
Architecturally, there is a sense of timelessness, inspired by Scandinavian design. The family wanted a home that was comfortable and modern in style. It has strong, contemporary features such as steel doors and windows, and a cantilever roof. This is juxtaposed in the interiors by a softer color palette and warm wood finishes.
The horizontal planes, extending from interior to exterior, play an integral role in bringing indoor living out. Unobstructed views create a seamless transition to the landscaped gardens. The materials used reinforce the concept of a home that’s inviting, warm, and centered around gathering in the outdoor spaces.
