Cottage on Maybell

Year
1949
Structure
House (Single Residence)
Style
Traditional
I painted the wood floors that were in bad shape, vaulted the ceiling, and covered it with new white oak. I added an antique chandelier and pew and vintage mirror for coming and going. Peg rails throughout the house help with storage in the small space.

I splurged on a nice range and had fun designing the tiled hood with inexpensive tile.

I kept this original wall of cabinets and a local math teacher/carpenter made an 18" dishwasher fit. He also made all the new cabinets to match these.

I made the floor plan within the inch to fit the washer/dryer, storage for linens and vacuum, hot water heater, and two closets in this nook of the house.

The blue ceilings were inspired by my southern Louisiana roots. The alpaca tapestry was from a neighbor's estate sale. Cheap amazon velvet swivel chairs, a ceramic elephant that has been in my family my whole life, and a splurgy coffee table pull the look together.

I bought 100 yardsticks at an antique closeout to make a large art piece in homage of my architect grandfather. Yellow is also his favorite color.

This was being used as the front door. It was in terrible shape. Someone had added on to widen the door. We restored it to the original mortise location, sanded it down to wood and put in new tempered glass.

I added nooks where I could to make up for little surface area in the small 3-piece bathroom. The oak medicine cabinet off of Etsy is one of my favorite things in the house.

The (less than) 900 sq/ft house originally only had one bathroom. I was able to squeeze in one more. It is my favorite part of the entire project.

My husband built my custom closet organization design out of pine for both of the small, but mighty, closets.

The brass sconces were original from my in-laws house one block down the street. They were covered in thick brown paint but cleaned up nicely. The sofa is from our local thrift store. The receipt was still under the old cushion. It was made for someone in Jackson Hole in the 1990's. I cut all new foam and sewed new cushions. The fabric I picked up in Salt Lake City.

The two bedrooms are the same size. The second bedroom is large enough for a queen and twin bed with thrifted desk in between.

The main ensuite has custom cabinetry to match the original design. The medicine cabinet was found originally in the kitchen. I had my husband frame it into the wall and had a local glass shop cut a thrifted mirror for the front. The natural light is perfect in the morning for getting ready.

I love counter space so I opted for one large sink with two faucets instead of two separate sinks.

During the framing process I had my husband put in this ledge for product. I had accidentally purchased this accent tile in 4x4 format and found ways to use it in both bathrooms to create pattern and interest. I snatched the fish paintings from my grandparents art collection. I friend from grade school painted them.

A wonderfully restored 1949 cottage in the heart of Pinedale, WY, surrounded by three mountain ranges full of adventure. It took my husband and I a year-and-a-half and $165k to take this small house completely apart and put it back together. We reused studs, cabinets, doors, handles, hinges and hardware. And we sourced more pieces from neighboring houses built at the same time. All the reuse and diy made the project a true labor of love.
