The Hallam Laneway Suite stands out from typical rental laneway suites in the city. In this project, we aim to blur the line between professional and client, allowing the homeowner's personality to shine through. The result is a forever home that caters to their lifestyle.
Our focus was on executing simple gestures well. By converting the angular plane requirement into a generous second-floor balcony, we simplified the overall form. The use of a single material emphasizes this form and highlights the craftsmanship of the details.
This typology also provides an opportunity to reconsider traditional domestic layouts. We placed a washer and dryer in the walk-in closet, transforming it from spacious to enviable. Furthermore, we replaced the stair guardrail with glass, creating a more open ground floor and inviting uninterrupted natural light from the skylight above. Even the built-in shelving is optimized, as the mechanical closet door doubles as a display shelf.
Through effective collaboration, design can permeate every corner, allowing occupants to personalize the space. As with all our projects, we strive to maximize the potential of each endeavor, showcasing the diversity this typology can bring to the housing stock in Toronto.
