This home was built in 1880 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which made its 2020 modern renovation a true architectural challenge. 510 Architects and RIC design build worked together to make this “old meets new” design come together.

Due to Architectural Commission and Historic requirements, the front of the house remained virtually the same just with a fresh coat of paint and new landscaping. The modern element of the house pivots around an addition made to the back which salvaged the original masonry to embrace the new, corrugated metal and cumaru wood materials and clean lines. To do this, major structural support had to be put in place and new footers had to be poured for the wall to remain safe during construction. A new primary bedroom, bathroom, extended kitchen, balcony and deck were added, and every other room in the house was renewed in one way or another. All of the original hardwood floors were restored, as were the original windows and trim. Modern design details were chosen throughout the house such as sleek black tile in the powder room, custom designed kitchen and bathroom cabinetry with inset routed “handles,” and minimalist plumbing and lighting fixtures. The style lands in a delicate balance between history and modernity and showcases a critical element of contemporary architecture: surprise.

In all, 437 square feet were added to the house, making it 1,896 sq ft. overall with three bedrooms and two and a half baths. The house belongs to first-time homeowners Jake Harlan and Lauren Bogan who took on this massive renovation.
