During the design process, my aim was to create a bright, spacious and friendly living space with liberating the existing floor plan of the flat. The structural facilities of the building gave me the opportunity to demolish all the partition walls, and figure out a new, contemporary and user-friendly floor plan for the apartment for the future. Thanks for the good orientation of the flat, the space flows in natural sunlight from morning till sunset. The entire flat got new oak wooden flooring without using any doorsteps, so as to keep the continuity between the spaces of the apartment. I used good quality natural materials to create a calm and harmonic overall picture. I tried to find a balance between white matte and natural oak surfaces. On the walls I used a warm white creamy tone, which gives a smooth and homogenous background for the furnitures. During the design process I applied the same principles in different scales. The built-in furnitures are also integrated into the basic concept with their matte white and oak surfaces. They try to be functional, but stay hidden in the space. The custom made oak console desk and the special book shelf hanging on steel cords are examples of how I tried to manage space and keep the overall views of the rooms light and airy. The details of the apartment, such as the hidden curtain rods, brushed aluminium switches, heavy plain doors, etc. also offer a special user experience. For the furnishing I combined old and new pieces to keep the balance between different ages and moods, keeping the spaces away from being overwhelmed or boring. I collected some nice vintage Scandinavian furnitures which gave an explicit direction for the furnishing, and a strong atmosphere for the flat. I also choose some iconic design pieces for the key points of the apartment, such as the PH 5 pendant lamp of Poul Henningsen over the dining table, or Arne Jacobsen’s AJ floor lamp next to the couch. The accidentally found two pieces of LEM bar stools by Shin and Tokomo Azumi are also a pretty good match with the oak kitchen island.
