The Logan Modern Addition is an intervention on an existing single family home that connects the main level of the house to the carefully programmed landscape. The site had limited space, but was big on impact. The existing first level had a "U" shape circulation pattern, the first goal of the addition was to close the loop to create a full circle of circulation.

The kitchen was to expand with a full remodel, including the addition of a 48" Italian range, two dishwashers, and a dumbwaiter. The kitchen is a traditional white, with white marble countertops and backsplash. The kitchen island is a warm white oak wrapped in a grey granite. There is a separate bar area, as well as a pantry wall that extends into the adjacent hall and den. A new folding window wall creates a barrier free connection with the new expansive deck, which flows into the yard.

This addition provides a volume expansion with a clerestory of windows, and three skylights. Douglas fir beams extend through the space to an extended overhang, protecting the openings. This allows the interior of the space to connect with the deck and yard for the many gathering that the clients host throughout the year. The landscape includes a sunken fire pit, grill island and outdoor dining, a vegetable garden, a rock garden, and a sauna built by the owner.

The attached one car garage was converted from storage to interior space, creating a 3/4 bath on the main level and a den. This is connected with a hallway that can be private to the den for a guest suite, or serve as the main level bathroom. The den took advantage of the full volume of the existing roof rafters, and the addition of rear patio doors connects this as well to the back yard.

The entire roof of the addition is a green roof system with sedums, helping to offset the additional rainwater from the small addition. This flows and integrates with the rest of the landscape to make a cohesive improvement of the site.
