A sliding pass-through window allows easy access from the kitchen to the grill. Stainless steel countertops & high-gloss cabinets keep a modern feel. 'Simple but functional' was the goal for this home.

This home was purposefully designed to preserve the trees on the property. A vegetated/living roof grows along the west-facing carport and can be watered and picked just off the front entryway. The double shed roof mimics the movement of the ocean waves.

Ample glazing along the north facade allows for consistent filtered light for the owner's art gallery and captures the sculptural quality of the handcrafted stairs. This north-side covered porch creates a cool late afternoon hangout spot during the hot summer months.

The stairs and exposed timber frame were custom crafted from reclaimed heart pine salvaged from an old SC warehouse. The home utilizes modestly sized spaces for a total of 2600sf.

This home has maximum exposure to the sun in the winter, and in the summer, the house is nicely shaded under trees. Each window was strategically placed to allow optimal cross-ventilation. Each room is modest in size, designed to accommodate the bare essentials. The sliding barn door allows for the Master Bedroom to open to the living space below and soak up the fireplace heat during the cold months.

This house stands out among the traditional homes with a unique contemporary and artistic flair, with traditional elements to ground her back down. Charred Wood (Shou Sugi Ban) clad the fireplace area.

The homeowner requested that her home be sequestered into sections, portions of which would only be used when guests were staying. The guest portion was zoned on a separate HVAC system and can be heated and cooled independently. Each modest sized room creatively utilizes the volume to maximize functions. Loft railing uses a crisscrossing of rope to form the barrier. This west-facing deck captures evening sunsets across the neighboring marsh.

From Amber Allen

This 2,400-square-foot home has a contemporary style with earthy architecture elements. The challenge was to design a custom residence to fit on a tight, uneven lot among the gorgeous live oak trees and to provide plenty of ocean views. The primary focus was to maximize efficiency and aim toward a low carbon footprint within the owners’ budget. To achieve these goals, the home was zoned into three separate spaces for energy efficiency, passive solar and cooling designs and a green vegetated roof. Local materials such as reclaimed heart pine and charred wood were incorporated and shaped by craftsmen to achieve an authentic look that fit the owners’ asthetic and values.
