Set on a property near Ray’s Lift, the cabin has great access to the ski slopes and views. In the living room, the southern windows look out at Sundance’s ski slopes, while the west facing windows perfectly frame Mount Timpanogos. The cabin features clean contemporary lines with vernacular materials and feel, such as exposed heavy timber structure and window walls. Home to two families, the cabin has two main suites in the “Texas Twin” pattern. Rooms and spaces were created for generational use across families: grandparents, adult kids, grandkids. The 2-story glass stairwell with a sunken reading room provides a cozy spot for watching skiers during the winter and hikers during the summer and fall.

The clients originally wanted a steep pitched gabled roof that is traditionally found in Sundance. After evaluating the options, we concluded that a simpler single shed roof would shed snow effectively to avoid ice dams and allow the snow to slide off to the north instead of piling up in front of entries. Sundance’s design review committee initially had concerns about the modern design as they’ve protected their development patterns for decades to maintain a very particular look, but after seeing the models they approved. Materials like thermally modified wood cladding and durable board formed concrete were used to weather in the mountain climate.
