I wanted to introduce myself and see if you were interested in featuring a full home project we just completed in Birmingham, AL. DWELL magazine focuses on high-end custom interiors that are inspirational, with every component being thoroughly thought through. When we started, this project looked dated, straight from the 1990’s. Our goal was to update the home to fit better within neighborhood and be the high-end custom home it had the potential to be. Because this is the clients forever home and the place they want to raise their children, the wife really wanted the home to be timeless and something that inspired her for years to come. DWELL does a great job showcasing a balance between modern and tradition design and we did that on this project. This project took the husbands more modern and masculine design aesthetic and married it with the wife’s more traditional, classic aesthetic. For this project, we found inspiration studying natural materials within a space and how they all could related to one another. From the classic unlacquered brass hardware with the more modern lighting and upholstered pieces, each fits uniquely and perfectly together. I love being inspired by antiques and vintage one-of-a kind pieces that are unique to the room you are designing. Art is just as important as the furniture, in my opinion, and I always love letting the art set the tone and the overall mood of a space, and then design around it. For this project we had several custom, more modern, pieces of art that we let tell the story for each room individually. DWELL teaches the design community how to take the classical styles of architecture and mix them with the cutting edge more modern design and this project is a great example of that.
The husband design aesthetic leans more modern and his wife’s is more traditional. For this project, I would describe our design philosophy as “mixing the old and the new” and finding that great balance of modern and traditional. Our team worked hard to layer antique and modern elements into each space. Whether you are incorporating antique beams, doors, or a recent find at a great antique store, we love marrying those pieces with new contemporary components. We feel this is the easiest way to make sure something looks curated and special. The client has followed us on social media for years and always said if she ever moved to this area she was going to give us a call. She was a the best client and really trusted us and our advise through every step of this project down to selecting textiles and all finish materials.
