Crafted with the intention to evoke both drama and warmth, our design for the living room creates a cozy, inviting, and versatile space. The thrifted curved sectional provides visual interest and perfectly complements the size of the space – comfortably seating up to 8 people. The nesting marble tables add a natural element to the design, while the burled wood chairs are pieces of art in themselves. The focal point of the living room is the custom three-sided linear fireplace which features an asymmetrical quartz hearth and a vertical shou sugi ban wood treatment. This fireplace is meant to leave a lasting impression and can be appreciated not only from the living room but also from the adjoining dining and kitchen spaces, creating a harmonious and engaging atmosphere throughout.

While designing the dining room, we carefully considered various factors to establish a distinct area within an open space. Our goal was to create an ideal setting for a spacious round table and we incorporated oversized rattan chandeliers to enhance this unique dining area. A lacquered linen dining table, thoughtfully centred to the glass railing, was chosen to add a sculptural element and to further define the boundaries of this space. The simple wooden dining chairs add warmth and clean lines, resulting in a well-rounded and grounded dining room design.

The ensuite was designed to exude a bold yet luxurious spa-like experience. It features an oversized steam shower with black concrete and large format porcelain tiles, a freestanding solid surface bathtub with lantern pendant lighting, and a floating double vanity. Custom mirrors were cut to accentuate the high ceiling and a vanity station with a natural stone waterfall was incorporated for added storage, along with a custom linen closet.

Designed to feel like a high-end boutique, this closet allows for unique wardrobe pieces to take center stage. Its contemporary aesthetic is further elevated by stained oak shelving and the Viefe slim system imparts an airy and open ambiance without compromising storage space. This system is also incredibly adaptable and can be easily customized with bracket adjustments. Taking full advantage of the vaulted ceilings, this closet maximizes every inch of available space, making it both functional and beautiful.

Welcome to The Beam House, the first project by Tano Studio. Located in Calgary's Rutland Park, we executed a full renovation of this 1950’s bungalow to create a modern family home with 4 bedrooms and 3 and a half bathrooms. Rather than being constrained by the original architecture, we completely reimagined both the interior and exterior of the property, selectively retaining permanent fixtures while removing elements to enhance height, square footage, and spacial flow. Our design approach for The Beam House marries form and function, embracing simplicity as a canvas for relaxation. Each room feels carefully curated and utilizes mixed textures and natural materials such as wood, stone, and marble to create a sense of serenity and tranquillity. Our emphasis on restraint and balance ensures that the overall design is neither overwhelming nor minimalist. The result is a contemporary yet inviting home that seamlessly blends warmth, innovation, and functionality. Why "Beam" House? During the renovation process, we decided to remove the original roof and increase the ceiling height from 8 feet to 16 feet. This required the installation of a 56-foot steel beam that spans the entire length of the house from front to back. What started as a necessary structural element quickly revealed itself to be a stunning design feature in its own right. Rather than cover it up, we knew the beam had to be celebrated and showcased as an integral part of the home's character.
