The Belfast Residence is a new, modern house situated on a 150 acre farm.
This abundance of land afforded a single level plan consisting of a series of overlapping programmatic bars. It also created a place-less and scale-less condition.
It was a challenge to create a house that felt rooted and intimate both inside and outside. The development of the exterior spaces was critical in establishing a transitive scale between the relatively small rooms of the house and the expansive site. The master bedroom and bathroom share views of an intimate zen garden. A reading garden nested in the center of the plan brings light and air to spaces that would otherwise be buried.
The kitchen’s fully retractable doors are sheltered by a cantilever that extends out over the pool. As a result, the kitchen reaches toward the fire pit establishing a formal connection between the interior and exterior spaces.
