The eight foot wide, GenY House was conceived as a piéd à tier for a couple who live in the countryside. It is located in an old cottage neighborhood near the Ottawa River. The houses geometric form and texture, in contrast to the adjacent houses was inspired by the couples admiration of traditional Japanese residential architecture. Both its form and planning are well defined and bear testament to the simplicity of the Japanese aesthetic. The linear composition of the interior rooms give way to the protected and shaded spaces of the balcony and veranda. This somewhat carved approach establishes both a strong and alluring relationship between the veranda and the interior loving spaces. The expansive use of glass allows the borrowing of vistas to create the illusion of generous interior rooms. Western red cedar was chosen for both its durability and warmth while the fixed and sliding screens add to the character of the facade whilst providing privacy.
