A single-family house with a secondary suite, the Highwood House takes advantage of an unconventionally shaped property to create a small yet spacious home to grow in. The property was originally unrealistic to build on because of the very narrow frontage, wide back and two direction slope, but the owner/architect was able to bring the home to life by incorporating a secondary suite above the garage. The suite has its own entrance and is connected to the main house via an elevated deck; the intention was to provide more space and access for a growing family or senior family member for the future. A shared courtyard with fire pit allows for privacy while taking advantage of the outdoors.
The interior is a protected sanctuary, with views of the private courtyard that bring in natural light throughout the house. Extra large panels of stone tile give the illusion of extra space in the open main living area. The owner has outfitted the home with family heirlooms, vintage furniture and antiques which provide depth and an eclectic contrast with modern aesthetic of the design of the home.
