Lean to built on to the North end of an old threshing barn in Wales, UK. The black cladding was designed to be in keeping with the original cladding of the barn but in a modern way. The whole build was designed and made by the owner Paul Gent including all fitted elements. Paul wanted the building to be modern yet traditional using local timber and materials for a 'softer modern' look. The building was made using a timber frame, cedar cladding on the exterior which has been charred using the Shou Sugi Ban tequnique. The black timber was continued inside on the interior beams and windows. The colour palette inside was inspired by Japanese interiors but also has a nod to eccentric English drinking houses with 'cubby holes' and interesting antiques. The furniture has a mid century theme with pieces from Ib Kofad Larssen, Arne Jacobsen and Guy Rogers. There is a charred black statement staircase which is the focal piece of the room. Paul invented his own micro cement to go on the walls and the interior walls this gives an interesting texture against the Birch Ply walls. Downstairs there is a living space and shower room toilet. Up the floating double staircase leads to a mezzanine bedroom and on the other side, a bath.
