The 47 m² apartment in Prague, comprising two rooms with a kitchenette and designed by the studio Ateliér CG-Creative, is a great example of what can be done if you leave everything to the experts. The client had just three requirements - she wanted the apartment to have a pink colour scheme, to follow feng shui rules, and also to reflect her personality. She had complete faith in designer Pavla Piknerová and her experienced team to achieve this. The result was a perfect oasis of femininity, which quickly became a much-loved retreat for her.
A feng shui room doesn’t have to look like some sort of shrine, nor does punk have to be an eyesore. One excellent example of this is the apartment in the refurbished villa in Malvazinky. The interior is stylish, yet each room is laid out according to the principles of feng shui. Punk is reflected in the dominant choice of colour. Few people would be so bold as to fit the whole apartment out in pink. Yet the designer managed to bring together everything the client wanted without anything disrupting the overall impression. Just the opposite in fact, as it all matches perfectly.

The basic rule of feng shui is that energy flows naturally through the room.  This means that residents and visitors feel at ease and safe there. And the designer followed these principles when working on the project. It was important to incorporate elements that would work together in the space, while avoiding unaesthetic accessories and décor. Good feng shui is not obvious at first glance. It is something you notice after you have spent some time in the space. You suddenly realise that you have a good feeling about the room, even though it might not be your own favourite or preferred style.

In the living room, feng shui consultant Alena Topinková wanted to accentuate the elements of metal and water as sources of energy that are not only in harmony with the space, but also with the owner’s own personal tastes. However, this definitely didn’t mean adding some little Chinese metal figurines, an aquarium, or a tacky picture of a lake. The soft powder pink, white and grey combined with luxurious gold accessories are perfectly suitable to complement the metal and also nicely emphasise the water. The decorative clear blown glass lighting fixtures further enhance the overall effect.

Wood as a feng shui element is represented mostly by live plants. These do not really belong in the bedroom, for instance, and so the designer opted for a large floral print covering one wall, which nicely accentuates the high headboard of the dark-green velvet bed. All these elements have been tastefully included, and perfectly match the owner’s other requirements.

The colours play an important role in the interior as a whole. The glass lighting fixtures mentioned above are pink. Shades of pink can also be found in the floral wall print. Choosing pink as the dominant colour was a bold move, one that most designers might consider excessively punk. Yet although pink features in every room, the general impression is not overly saccharine by any standards. It actually gives a sense of elegance and luxury. Pink appears mostly in the accessories – in powder shades on the glass tiles, on the sofa covers, and also on some of the decorations.

The grey and white base, however, is timeless. The main concept centres around lacquered furniture and authentic materials. Mrs Piknerová has shown confidence in her use of ceramics, marble, brass and glass. The neutral tones are complemented by glossy and gold highlights, which can be found on the lighting and on the handles of the cupboards. They have been made to measure and provide plenty of storage space. The apartment is also about sustainability, as everything that is pink or otherwise aesthetically specific is easily substitutable. The core of the apartment can be given a totally new look, at relatively little cost.

Finally, it should be noted that although the villa in Malvazinky has been completely reconstructed, the original building dates back to 1906. So meeting all the client’s criteria was a real challenge for the designer. After all, it is very important to her that the interior blends in smoothly with the exterior. Nevertheless, the client was happy to take all her advice into account and go for a less than traditional concept.

This trust, coupled with the designer’s imagination, has resulted in an interior where the client really feels at home. The space reflects the personality of the owner herself. They say that how you live is a good reflection of your inner self. And if the client wanted pink and a feng shui layout, the Ateliér CG-Creative studio team was determined to oblige, with no question of compromise. The result is a delighted client and a truly charming apartment.
