ADM has designed modern a renovation for an old home in the Wailupe neighborhood in Honolulu, HI.
The home owner’s goal for the renovation was to modernize the home and create better flow between existing spaces. Much of the existing forms and layout were kept. Large openings in the interior were created to improve natural air flow and visual connection between spaces. Pocket doors and floor to ceiling glass walls were used to bring in more natural light and create a strong relationship to the landscape.
A portion of the existing hip roof was converted to flat to create a more modern exterior look without having to replace the entire roof structure. The entry way was modernized with wood siding, frosted glass, concrete stepping pads and a river rock garden.
The kitchen got a major makeover incorporating polished white and grey cabinetry with a water fall edge island and a wood veneered wine pantry.
The existing oval shaped pool was an anomaly to the home’s otherwise rectilinear forms but ADM wanted to keep it feeling it would be a nice contrast to the straight lines of the residence. The strong rectilinear patterns of the Baja ledge, spa, raised deck, and paving further emphasize the oval pool as the feature piece of the backyard
