This striking waterfront family home sits on over 8 acres of land and overlooks the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay. The sweeping vistas offer rare views of pristine barrier islands with beautiful beaches. Centered around movement, light, and Zen, the homeowners wanted a home to accept changing experiences, making them move and use the whole house throughout the day. This was achieved by dividing the home into four pavillions: sleeping area, living area, auto/storage area, and working/recreation area. A hall connecting the pavillions is clad in white panels, providing awareness of the transition while linking back to the woven landscape of the home. Simple yet traditional forms with a modern take join the owner’s different aesthetic tastes into a tastefully built home. reSAWN TIMBER co. provided NIGIRI shou sugi ban charred Accoya and MONOGATARI 2.0 shou sugi ban charred Cypress exterior cladding for this modern renovation.

NIGIRI by reSAWN TIMBER co. features charred Accoya wood burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban. NIGIRI can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding. Accoya wood results from decades of research and development that has brought together a long-established, extensively proven wood modification technique and leading-edge patented technology – acetylation to create a high-performance wood ideal for outdoor use and challenging applications.

MONOGATARI 2.0 by reSAWN TIMBER co. features charred Cypress burnt in the Japanese style of shou sugi ban. MONOGATARI 2.0 can be used for interior or exterior wall cladding. The burning process accentuates the wood grain and creates varying colors when viewed from different angles and in different light. Cypress is not only a beautiful wood; it is durable and easy to maintain. It contains the natural preservative oil cypressene, making the wood resistant to rot, insects, and decay. This makes Cypress a natural choice in locations with constant heat, humidity, and torrential rains.
