Tranquil yet dramatic, on land yet at sea, remote yet connected, Wood H weaves disparate elements together to create a richly dynamic tapestry unlike any other.”

2. Thompson Lake House

Architect: CTA | Cushing Terrell, Location: Eagle, Idaho

From the architect: “The owners envisioned a family oasis that could be restful and serene yet open and welcoming, and capable of entertaining large gatherings. They envisioned an environment that blended interior and exterior, seamlessly integrated into its stunning surroundings. The interior and exterior are connected by operable glass hanger doors which frame vistas of the lake, landscaping, beach, and distant architecture.”

3. Suns End Retreat

Architect: Wheeler Kearns Architects, Location: Michigan

From the architect: “Overlooking Lake Michigan, the home is designed for a family seeking respite from city living and immersion along the quiet beach. The aesthetic of the project grew out of the client’s desire for a year-round, minimal, low-maintenance, and intimate retreat. A sequence of layered planes, textures, and spaces achieve a balance between privacy and openness to the outdoors. The two-story, opaque volume parallels the adjacent property to provide seclusion, while the public, glassy volume bridges the lakeside beach landscape and the roadside wooded landscape.”

4. Hillside Sanctuary

Architect: Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, Location: Puget Sound, Washington

From the architect: “The owner of this property came to Hoedemaker Pfeiffer looking for a personal retreat inspired by a home lost to fire decades earlier in the hills of Appalachia. The firm’s task was not to recreate that home but rather to give its spirit new form in the Pacific Northwest. Taking inspiration from its remote site in the San Juan Islands, our team envisioned a series of simple stone volumes. From that concept emerged the main house and a guest house, each responding to its own unique location on the site. Together they provide friends and family with comfortable accommodation while offering a sanctuary for the owner at the main home.”

5. Haystack Rock Getaway

Interior designer: Melanie Gaither Interiors, Location: Cannon Beach, Oregon

From the interior designer: “This down-to-the-studs beach house renovation focuses on the breathtaking view of Haystack Rock. The client, a couple in their fifties with a large family and a love for entertaining had been searching for the perfect beachfront home for nearly two decades. To accentuate the view as much as possible, we vaulted the ceiling and added oversized windows and a sliding door. The client has a large family and spends a lot of time entertaining—opening up the floor plan and allowing for plenty of seating ensured that everyone could be in one space at once.”
