From 1942 through the early 1980s, Phoenix architect Ralph Haver designed several affordable tract homes throughout Arizona’s capital. Haver’s signature midcentury-modern dwellings—often called Haver Homes or Haver Hoods—are considered emblems of Phoenix’s postwar development, characterized by their low-slung roofs, floor-to-ceiling glazing, clerestory windows, and rustic finishes.

Now, a 1949 Haver Home is on the market at 6534 North 13th Street in Kensington Terrace, a Phoenix neighborhood with a cul-de-sac of 12 homes designed by the local architect. The ranch-style residence spans roughly 1,906 square feet on a 10,659-square-foot lot.

The current homeowner, Joe McCallum, is a midcentury modern enthusiast who is helping to launch a vintage furniture store in Phoenix’s Sunnyslope neighborhood called Eye Opener. Joe tasked his brother, Adam McCallum, with designing a careful remodel of the residence, “taking the interior down to the studs,” Joe says.

“We kept as many original details as we could—in particular the steel casement windows and period-appropriate design elements such as sconce lighting in the bedrooms,” Joe continues. The impressive interior also maintains the signature Ralph Haver vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and clerestory windows. Concrete floors flow throughout the home.

Two separate seating areas near the entrance lead to the dining area and remodeled kitchen, which takes inspiration from kitchens in Eichler homes throughout California. Black, leather-finish granite and stainless-steel countertops contrast with mahogany cupboards in the cooking area. A glass door and floor-to-ceiling windows connect the kitchen and dining room to the backyard.

“Part of what attracted me to this house was how well the [existing] addition matched the original house,” Joe says. “I found out that an architect who worked with Haver, Harry Youngkin, lived next door and designed the additions for both that house and this one.”

“As part of the remodel, Adam reconfigured the interior of the addition as the owner’s suite and den, maintaining the original structure and the vintage louvered windows,” Joe continues. “He replaced the solid wall facing the patio in the den with a wood-framed window wall that matches the original in the main part of the house.” Scroll ahead to see more of the three-bedroom, three-bathroom Ralph Haver home, currently listed for $1,051,000.
