High above Manhattan's Upper West Side, landscape architects cultivate an oasis that conjures the remove of Central Park, on a far more intimate scale.
The team had plenty to work with in terms of views: Central Park fans out around the home, with an uninterrupted view of the supertall 432 Park Avenue residential tower in the distance.
Since the building's facade is landmarked, the existing fence could not be altered. The architects responded by dressing up the perimeter with garden and design elements. Benches punctuate steel planters, creating a sitting area along the terrace walkway.
Limestone pavers and easy-to-maintain AstroTurf recreate the feel of a country patio underfoot, right in one of the busiest cities in the world.
An outdoor hangout sits beneath an arbor-like overhang. A waterfall wall partitions a neighbor's terrace, and adds ambient noise.
Conveniently located outside the entrance, a glass table, surrounded by Eames Molded Fiberglass chairs, provides the perfect place for alfresco dining during warmer months.
At night, glowing planters illuminate the outdoor space, guiding guests along the walkway.
