The door to the street boasts a graffiti-resistant paint, rendering even the most tempermental tags temporary.

The highlight of the east wing entry is the oversize front door, fabricated by JIG Design Build, which swings open on a pivot hinge.

The front door of this house in Scotland is built from charred cedar boards—a traditional way of fireproofing wood developed in Japan. In this case, the effect on the front door is likely more aesthetic than preventative, though you can never be too careful.

A bright yellow front door adds a bold pop of color to the minimal exterior palette.

Klopf Architecture preserved the vertical “thinline” wood siding, and matched it in kind at the front addition.

The exterior walls on the first floor of Virginia House by 2712 / Asociados are painted in a dark, neutral color that contrasts with the bright illuminated interiors and sunny yellow front door.

The entrance leads straight to the central atrium.

Wood accents are used throughout as a counterpoint to the texture and cream color of the Dhrangadhra stone. This material mix starts at the entry.

The entryway of the home is characterized not only by the red front door, but also by the large panels of glass on either side, including one that almost disappears, allowing the planting box to appear to continue seamlessly into the interior.

The entry to the 1953 midcentury ranch was reworked by Boyer. To the left, the popped-out window box contains a built-in bench which is part of the home office nook.

Main Access

Homeowner Simon Doonan stands next to the front door. "We have flamboyance, and we’re not inhibited about anything. [Architect] Gray Organschi gave [the house] that intellectual rigor needed to make it beautiful. We were well matched."

This midcentury home, originally owned by a local illustrator, needed updating, remodeling, and fortifying. Seattle-based SHED Architecture & Design tackled the project, keeping some classic features while updating others, like the front door in a semi-gloss orange.

"If you had to quarantine, it’s the best place to do it," says Jobe. "You have a connection to the outdoors, you’re comfortable with air and light. It’s impossible not to think about spaces in these terms now—how the places we’re living and working can keep us safe."
