Moving the entrance off the street to the rear of the house allowed for the creation of a diminutive side yard.

Working as designer, contractor, and builder, Samantha Mink took an unremarkable structure built in the 1950s and transformed it into a home for herself and her dog, Winston. “Because of its location on the street, I kept a kind of stern exterior where you can’t really see into the house,” she says. She treated the Douglas fir with a natural mineral wash and an exterior stain to give the wood dimension.

This Arts and Crafts style house built in 1910 by Swedish architect Fredrik Dahlberg was converted into a 12-bedroom homestay-like boutique hotel with an eclectic interior created by designer Ilse Crawford in collaboration with the hotel’s owner Jeanette Mix.

The concept of this Scandinavian getaway was simple: To create a cabin that is small and sparse yet spatially rich. The 55-quare-meter (592-square-foot) cabin, commissioned by a private client and completed in 2016, comprises a large living room, bedroom, ski room, and small annex with a utility room. It functions off the water and electricity grids.

The dining room features a Tulip table by Eero Saarinen with a customized walnut top manufactured by Pietrarte and a contemporary chair by the Italian company Arper.
