From the street, the Edgecliff Residence is characterized by a rainscreen made of galvanized electrical conduit—an inventive, low-cost solution that addresses several practical needs.

The Lookout occupies the alley side of the lot. “It’s a white box hovering above all of the visual noise of the alley,” says Humble. “We [located] the circulation to that side, and have all of our primary openings facing away from the alley toward the tree.”

An adjacent flat-roofed volume holds the garage, entry vestibule, laundry, and wine cellar.

GDA also seeks emotional involvement from the owner: since Matt Collins undertook the building project, Darkwood Residence has that quality in abundance!
