Floor Lamp Admiration Society
Looking for the perfect stand-up piece for a living room beset by chaos.
The AJ floor lamp was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1960 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (now called the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel). In fact, Jacobsen designed every detail inside the hotel, down to the cutlery in the restaurant. Five new colors, decided upon by the Jacobsen family, were introduced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the piece, which is carried by Louis Poulsen. Fun fact: If you visit Copenhagen, you can request to stay in the one remaining hotel room that still has all of Jacobsen’s original furnishings—Room 606.
One of Arne Jacobsen's earlier lighting designs was conceived in the late 1920s, as part of his nascent "Bellevue" concept, which included everything from residential buildings to a theater and custom furnishings. This floor lamp, called Bellevue AJ2 as part of their relaunched production, is available from &Tradition.
Japanese-American designer Isamu Noguchi was the master of the sculptural paper floor lamp. One of my favorites in his Akari series (and there are many to be admired in the collection) is model BB3/33S. Its iconic form was introduced to the mass market in the early 1950s, at that time it was made by hand in Gifu, Japan.
