How to Do Polished Concrete Floors

The home’s living room flows seamlessly into the outdoors. Mineral materials that were locally sourced and crafted were favored throughout the home. Polished concrete floors, natural basaltic walls, and white interior walls made of cement and lime plaster carry through the home. Aluminum-framed sliding doors separate the living room from the central patio. Traditional Mexican furnishings complete the space.

Loft-like features are used throughout the first floor interior space, including raw polished concrete floors, exposed beams (one of the few elements of the existing home that were preserved), and diamond-plate steel cladding on the floating staircase.

Inside, cedar beams add warmth while polished concrete floors provide easy passage for Matthew’s wheelchair. Other universal-design features include drop-down mechanisms for the kitchen counters and cooktop from Freedom Lift Systems.

The coffee table, red Memorex video ball TV, and red Mercer candlestick phone are all thrift store finds. The ceiling fan from Modern Fan Company is contemporary, but matches the retro aesthetic.
