Multigenerational

Take one stucco box of a house, put it on rollers, move 10 inches away from the property line, then add a second story: easy peasy. That’s Step One of how to make a house accessible for long-term visits from disabled parents. Step Two is the open floor plan for the kitchen, dining, and living room space that opens out onto a deck and backyard. Open out is literal. The glass doors don’t slide, they accordion to one side, as though removing a wall. The kitchen plays with texture and color with bamboo-faced cabinetry and colorful, playful backsplash tile. The vaulted ceiling in the kitchen and the kitchen island are enough to set the space apart. Outside, a new façade and entry to the house provides the upper floor with a deck, with windows that flood the stairwell and lower level with natural light.
