Housed on the top floor of a mid-century residential building, the apartment’s previous layout was cluttered and chaotic, giving no sense of space. The typical Catalan slabs with wooden beams were exposed, and the high ceilings and large windows offered a tremendous design opportunity to celebrate them while reinvigorating the space.

The proposal echoes the simplicity of a Finnish design while keeping with historic Catalan-construction. Nella Kasurinen and Nuria Heras worked together to create a strong concept that maintains the original details and accentuates them with a minimalist aesthetic.

The comfort and warmth of the space comes from the furniture selection, a pale green sofa with patterned cushions, done with fabrics related to the owners’ travels. Warm tones in the carpets, artwork, and accessories add the finishing touches to this livable space.

At certain points of the project’s detailing, traditional Catalan practices were used for tiling and joinery, a nod to the original finishes and local tradition. This was best exemplified in the bathroom finishes, where the floor tile mimics that of Catalan style in the 1940’s.

From Nuria Heras Diez

Interior Designer Nella Kasurinen and Nuria Heras, architect from nu-he Studio, designed the Avinyo Street Apartment, for a fast-growing family in Barcelona.

With just a 5 minute walk from the Basilica of Santa Maria of the Sea, the design for Avinyo reconciles the old with the new. The site is located in the Gothic Quarter, one of the oldest areas of the city of Barcelona, characterized by their small streets opening out into squares of 5-6 story buildings.
