SLH worked with a couple of long time clients to freshen up this beautiful vintage co-op in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. A collection of art, furniture pieces, and rugs from a lifetime of travels comes together with new acquisitions to create a meandering, casual home among period architectural details.

The traditional detailing of the apartment’s millwork reappears in the renovated kitchen/breakfast area however a considered eclecticism was introduced that infuses a modern sensibility. A relatively formal corner banquette upholstered in a jewel toned blue mohair is unexpectedly paired with Saarinen’s Tulip Chair and Pedestal Table. A classic kilim is underfoot and a small selection of the clients’ collection of work from emerging artists grace the walls. Razor thin suspended lighting addresses functional needs but is virtually invisible. The graphic backsplash tile was inspired by the clients’ vintage mid-century bar stools from Palm Springs.
