From Heather Banks

This project started with the restoration of an historic 500 square foot bungalow in downtown Austin, TX and culminated with a modern addition of almost 1400 square feet in additional space. Apart from the challenges of navigating a remodel of an historic cottage, the site had additional challenges with large heritage trees that needed to be preserved, as well as a slight slope. With the help of architect Trey Hailey of Hailey Studio, the project progressed and was awarded permits. The original home was gutted and renewed and the large addition added a kitchen/dining/living on the lower floor and bedroom suites on the upper floor. Marble topped handrails, a marble backsplash, and fluted kitchen island added character and warmth to the home. Builders/interior designers Cary Paul Studios strived for a warm modern look. The staircase tower is a feature element of the architecture - wrapped in cedar and featuring the marble handrails as well as a custom skylight with glass wrapping from the roof onto the side wall.
