Located on a Long Leaf Pine tree farm in Sanford, North Carolina, Cypress Cottage started as an unlikely idea to 'build a house on the island of a family owned lake.' Surrounded by Long Leaf Pine trees and nestled among large Cypress trees, this 1,260 square foot cottage sits on a 4,500 square foot island and is surrounded by 18 acres of water with spectacular views of the lake and an up close connection to the diverse wildlife that calls this tree farm home. It was important that this cottage served as a celebration of the land and the heritage it's built on. The house utilized timber directly from the farm, a Shou Sugi Ban exterior that symbolizes the periodic controlled burns that protect the Long Leaf Pine fields and Cypress design features, like the exterior eves and interior entryway, that highlight the beauty of the Cypress trees that are a mere 10 feet from the living room, right at the waters edge. Reclaimed heart pine is the hero material in the kitchen and bar, showcasing how 'time' can often be the most beautiful ingredient of all. The 9 foot windows and doors provides this pavilion-style cottage with a feeling of being part of nature, from the Canadian Geese nest nestled on the slope of the island in spring to the turtles and bass that regularly swim up for an evening feeding in fall, this cottage provides a front row seat to NC wildlife. We have built this cottage for our family to enjoy together and to show our appreciation for the land it sits on, we hope you appreciate it too!
