Urban Treehouse in Oakland

Oakland’s Joy Street Design is known for creating lively, colorful interiors, like this modern home that the studio’s founder, Kelly Finley, designed for her family. The two-level house had three bedrooms and three bathrooms but needed to be completely gutted to make room for Kelly’s vision for the space. The home now has four bedrooms and three bathrooms with a proper master suite and walk-in closet. The interiors are infused with personal touches that reflect the family’s life and memories.

The living room is an inviting space with a bright blue sofa accessorized with abstract-print pillows. The bright hues are balanced with a light rug and warm wood flooring. Kelly also created an indoor-outdoor area by adding a cedar deck to the oak trees behind the house. My favorite detail in the living room is the oversized, colorful artwork which is a unit for the TV — the artwork slides into the side of the bookshelf.

The kitchen is a functional space with loads of storage — the metal pendants are the design focal point here, and I love the color contrast of the black island and hood with the blue counter stools upholstered in colorful abstract prints. The kitchen comes with a cozy breakfast nook that flaunts an accent wall and receives abundant sunlight from the large window it’s set up next to. The formal dining area flaunts a multi-colored ceiling, a gold pendant, printed curtains and still looks balanced and clean-lined.

The master suite is all about comfort with sleek, modern design and luxe furniture and fittings, while the kid’s bedroom showcases playful motifs and comfort. The entire home is accessorized with artwork that Kelly picked up while traveling and adds the perfect finishing touch to this colorful, joyful home.
