Stairs

The loft get lots of natural daylight through three rows of windows. The stairway to the mezzanine originally had open treads, but Sims and Hanna closed them off and utilized the area underneath for storage. A new wooden dowel handrail complements the original pine floors.

Exposed beams stretch across the main level, connecting the living areas and kitchen.

Inside the waffle front door, a common feature of Deck Houses, are an Artek Tea Trolley 900 by Alvar Aalto with a ceramic vase by Femme Sole and Home Union.

A Douglas fir staircase references the work of Alvar Aalto and makes a sculptural statement.

Warm white oak shelving lines the hallway of the suite and three steps connects it to the bedroom in the addition, as the site is sloped from front to back.

A new white oak staircase and railing lead to the main suite now occupying the garden level. The shadow reveal detail is carried throughout the house, scribing doorframes, windows, and baseboard.

A subtly curved staircase leads from the neutral-hued living room to the kitchen.

The top of the staircase is three feet wide, to accommodate the built-in shelving, and becomes wider towards the base, to four feet, making the storage underneath very useful for bigger and boxier items.

The centrally located stair from the ground floor to the roof deck is partially screened by leftover cedar planks from the exterior. A skylight above brings in plentiful natural light.
