With an elegant, instagrammable aesthetic and rumors of having the fastest Internet in town, Casa Pueblo Tulum is the picture-perfect retreat for creative global nomads.

Its millennial spirit is no surprise, given that the property is the work of Derek Klein, a seasoned world traveler and one of Tulum’s original tastemakers. Klein co-founded the design hotel alongside entrepreneur Omar Rodriguez.

The founders collaborated with NYC-based interior designer Mike Moser and local architect Jaime Aramburu of Beast Estudio Creativo to transform a nondescript gray building into a unique destination that weaves references to Yucatan haciendas with tropical bohemian vibes and refined urban minimalism.

“When we design, we look at the area we are developing in,” Derek explains. “The concept of Casa Pueblo Tulum (our first property) was designed around a more tropical urban landscape. The design was inspired by the urbanization that has been taking place over the last decade in Tulum, and the rich colonial architecture found in Mexico—with a tropical minimalism approach.”

Centered around a leafy, light-filled atrium, Casa Pueblo features a restrained material palette of white plaster, Caribbean ipe wood, anthracite, and polished concrete. The design approach focuses attention on the locally crafted and handmade details, from the banquette upholstery to the Yucatan patterned tile.

Along with its 16 rooms, the boutique hotel offers an outdoor saltwater pool, an in-house restaurant, a cafe, and a rooftop bar. Envisioned as a new creative hub for Tulum, Casa Pueblo also hosts community events with live music and wellness-focused classes.
