Hay and Dietiker Are Bringing Classic Bruno Rey Designs Into the 21st Century

What’s old is new again.

Danish lifestyle brand Hay has teamed up with furniture manufacturer Dietiker to update four of Swiss designer Bruno Rey’s classic pieces: a chair, dining table, coffee table, and stool. Designed by Rey in 1971, the collection takes his exemplary pieces and gives them a light refresh for a modern audience. With new designs and colors, both longtime fans of Rey and design newbies can now own a little piece of history.

Bruno Rey’s namesake chair is the heart of the collection, pictured here in Slate Blue and Grape Red and surrounding a Rey dining table in Slate Blue.

Bruno Rey rose to stardom in the 1970s, designing everything from plant containers to bar stools. An appreciation for high-quality wood inspired  his eponymous chair, which emphasized simplicity as well as innovation. A unique connector made up of flexible steel springs keeps it all together, without the use of screws. Throughout his process, Rey had a desire to create a chair that resisted the formality of Swiss furnishings at the time. Opting to go for a more a playful form that still embraced utility, he designed the chair to be stackable, and in children’s sizes, too. Fifty years later, and the Rey chair (originally named the 3300 chair) is considered an icon of Swiss design.

The Rey chair, seen here in Deep Black, remains a striking staple over 50 years after its inception. Its clean lines and innovation are emblematic of Swiss design.

The new pieces still use the screwless process, but now come in a variety of hues selected by Hay, from a minty seafoam to a cherry red. (Don’t worry, minimalists: the original Golden color will also be available.)

Pictured here in Slate Blue, the Rey coffee table is available in four colors. Rounding out the lineup are Deep Black, Mint Green, and Deep Blue.

To flesh out the collection, Hay and Dietiker dug through the archives and created complementary dining tables, coffee tables, and stools.

The Rey stools are offered in five colors: Slate Blue, Deep Black, Scarlet Red, Golden, and Umber Brown (all pictured here except Umber Brown).

The chairs, stools, and tables retain the iconic unified silhouette but have been updated in new dimensions and colors.
