In the late 1950s, noted architect and professor Tivadar Balogh began building a residence for himself on a forested 2.7-acre lot in Plymouth, Michigan. Not long after he moved in with his family, the home—formally known as the Balogh House—won a Progressive Architecture Award.

The meticulously preserved midcentury home comprises several main living areas, two bedrooms, and a home office. According to Michigan Modern, the total cost of the project was $32,000, which was largely possible because the Balogh Family completed much of the work themselves.

Comprised of a simple cube clad in richly textured redwood, the 1,911-square-foot home is described as a “light box floating in the woods.” The main floor holds the master bedroom and kitchen, along with a two-story living room featuring a stunning wall of windows.

An additional bedroom and bath is located on the upper level, in addition to a cozy nook area illuminated by skylights. The lower level holds another family room surrounded by windows, which was formerly used as the owner’s studio.

Nicknamed the Cube, this single-family residence is now listed for the first time ever on the open market. In preparation for the sale, the home was painted, stained, and treated to new carpeting throughout. However, all of its unique details remain intact.
