1. KB House

Architect: TEC Taller EC, Location: Quito, Ecuador

From the architect: “The project strategy consisted of a rectangular plan closed towards its neighbors, open towards its adjacent lateral façade, with the immediate green area and retracted towards its interior through a central core formed by the staircase and a tree that functions as an articulator of the house, the program, and the light.”

2. Collingwood Residence

Architect: Frits de Vries Architects + Associates Ltd., Location: Bowen Island, British Columbia, Canada

From the architect: “Situated on Bowen Island’s West Coast, the Collingwood Residence is located on a private ten-acre lot surrounded by forest. The home is divided into three buildings, connected by the glass breezeways, as an intentional separation of public and private spaces. Social experiences are centered around the open kitchen, dining, and living space located in the central building, while the master and guest suites are located in the buildings to either side. The local material selection is reflective of the home’s west coast setting: cedar shingles clad the exterior, while the natural stone grounds the home firmly on its site. The building is highly insulated and airtight to limit the need for energy usage throughout the year.”

3. Aquas Perma Solar Firma

Architect: CplusC Architectural Workshop, Location: Alexandria, New South Wales, Australia

From the architect: “Aquas Perma Solar Firma is a home tailored to the needs of a modern, environmentally conscious, and socially responsible couple. [We] were approached by the owners of an existing terrace house in an urban area of Sydney to help them realize their vision of a home that would be the embodiment of their commitment to the environment. The result is Aquas Perma Solar Firma, a beautiful, small footprint home which has reinvented the terrace typology and lifestyle. Vertical circulation is shifted to the front façade and a circular stair is formed by an array of glass and timber battens which doubles as an internal garden. The house combines innovative architectural design with off grid green initiatives.”

4. Messner

Architect: noa* - network of architecture, Location: Seis am Schlern, Italy

From the architect: “At the foot of the Sciliar, in the picturesque area of Alpe di Siusi, the spirit of a barn is reborn as a home. An almost magical ambience is created, inspired by childhood memories. The house develops in a vertical way and instead of the classical room division there are what can be described a ‘hanging boxes’, which are positioned at different heights and interconnected by stairs and walkways, giving the sensation of walking up a mountain path towards the peak. The entire structure is conceived in a way that the further one goes up the level of privacy and intimacy is heightened.”

5. San Antonio House

Architect: Jaime Juárez Arquitectura, Location: Morelia, Mexico

From the architect: “The trapezoidal tracing of the property is what defined the construction of this house into three clearly settled volumes. Vegetation also plays a protagonist role in the design of this house, both outdoors and indoors. The exterior trees enclose the house generating distinct tons of shades and colors during the different seasons of the year. Within the interior, the unruly green vegetation contrasts with the stone floors and solid walls, reaching a perfect sense of balance. The entrance, a double height lobby that creates contrasting sensations and distinct visual ending points originated by water mirrors, light shafts, a tree, and a staircase. The walls that shape this area, divide the spaces into private and public areas. The different angles within the construction achieve visual ending points with great character, as well as, enhancing the sensations provoked by the pure whites that evolve into mixed tones as the day and the seasons go by.”
