8 New Spire Designs That Could Crown the Notre Dame Cathedral
On April 17, following the massive fire that destroyed the Notre Dame Cathedral, France’s prime minister Edouard Philippe announced a contest to design a new roof and spire for the famous building. "The international competition will allow us to ask the question of whether we should even re-create the spire as it was conceived by Viollet-le-Duc," Philippe said at a press conference. "Or if, as is often the case in the evolution of heritage, we should endow Notre Dame with a new spire."

Godart + Roussel Architectes
French firm Godart + Roussel Architectes posted this rendering on its Instagram page with the caption, "As architects, we are obviously sensitive to the question of its reconstruction but a question arises: should it be done again the same?"
Spanish architect POA Studio's proposal for a new roof for the cathedral is translucent and ethereal.
Studio NAB's design looks to modernize the Notre Dame Cathedral while staying respectful of the French Gothic architecture, with the addition of a greenhouse and apiary along the original roofline and spire.
British architect Norman Foster shared his ideas for Notre Dame with London's The Times.
Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas of Studio Fuksas proposed a Baccart crystal spire. "A crystal spiral symbol of the fragility of history and spirituality. Light as a symbol of immateriality," they wrote on Instagram.
Aj6 Studio, based in Brazil, wants to take the cathedral's shining feature, its stained glass, and create an entire roof and spire from the material.
Bratislava–based Vizum Atelier envisions a beam of light ascending from the place of the original spire.
David Deroo, a French architect and artist, has modeled a modernized version of the cathedral's original spire.
