Although many neighborhoods in the American South feature traditional homes with gabled roofs and wraparound porches, there’s also a growing trend towards prefab architecture. We’ve rounded up seven exemplary, design-forward homes throughout North Carolina that take advantage of prefabricated, modular, and kit construction methods.
Solar Farmhouse by Deltec Homes
Deltec’s Solar Farmhouse combines the aesthetics of traditional farmhouses with contemporary design and state-of-the-art systems. The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath layout totals just over 2,000 square feet. Like most of Deltec’s prefabs, it can be kitted out with a range of green building strategies to make it two-thirds more efficient than traditional homes.
In 2003, Resolution: 4 Architecture was one of 16 firms who participated in the Dwell Home Design Invitational—a competition to design a modern prefab home for $200,000. Their winning design, constructed in Pittsboro, North Carolina, is a groundbreaking case study that combines prefabricated construction with contemporary, modern design.
Nestled in the hills of the Smoky Mountains and oriented to prioritize views of the Appalachian Trail, this prefab cabin is constructed out of three shipping containers topped with a generous, double-sided overhang that creates two porches. The upper-level shipping container is available for vacation rentals on Airbnb.
Logangate Timber Homes has been designing and producing post-and-beam kit homes for over 50 years. Based in Youngsville, North Carolina, Enertia Homes is recognized as an innovator in green design. The company produces precut timber kits for building homes that heat and cool themselves with solar and geothermal systems.
Based in Kenly, North Carolina, Quality Log Home Builders produces several different log home kits. The Cardinal, with its strong emphasis at the front porch, is a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath single-story home with a dramatic cathedral ceiling.
