Deconstructed 2
The paintings in my new series are inspired by my 'Deconstructed" series of collages. Where previously my mixed-media works used the shapes of dress pattern pieces as figurative elements to explore Cubist space, in this new work the memory of those shapes informs a more painterly approach that is more expressive and where gestural mark-making creates layered shapes, which in turn, produce evolving figures.
Those figures appear mechanical because their origins are templates for the tailoring of second skins. A tailor lays out the templates for the pieces that go to make up a garment which resembles a collection of body parts to be configured into a whole object. The robotic figures in my work appear to be self-assembling from the components of the gestural mark-making that I have laid on the canvas.
