Hughes_O'Brien Portland Residence

Designed and built by Robert B. Beat in 1910, this Arts & Crafts style home is located in the Irvington neighborhood near downtown Portland, Oregon. The new Owners purchased the property in March 2017 and began an extensive renovation that lasted seven months. Given the home had no significant updates since 1910, the renovation was in large part a restoration of the original architectural features including woodwork, doors/windows, pocket doors, built-ins, wood floors, and stained glass windows. Aluminum siding was removed from the exterior and the original cedar wood siding repaired and re-painted with a color selection that gives the house a strikingly modern and updated look.

The home needed extensive re-work/upgrades to meet the homeowners expectations for modern living. The original servants kitchen was combined with a butler's pantry to create a more functional kitchen layout, while also providing space for a new half-bathroom on the 1st level and allowing for better access to the back garden. Upstairs, an existing bathroom was converted into a master bathroom, while a former sleeping porch was converted into a new guest bathroom and laundry room. Due to the home's location in a registered Historic District, the plans had to pass through a historic design review process to obtain permit approvals.

This renovation project is a perfect example of how to thoughtfully update an older home for modern living, while also maintaining the original architectural features and historic integrity that make this a truly exceptional home. The home will be featured and open to the public for viewing during two home tours scheduled in the Spring of 2018.
