The guest bedroom is heavenly thanks to a custom, low platform bed, custom linen curtains, Watt & Veke pendant lights, and side tables from Wisteria.

One of the largest construction challenges was the plumbing in the showers. "After our bathrooms were finally completed, we found water leakage coming out the base of both the showers," says Elaine. "Nothing seemed to solve the problem. It turned out it was a faulty plumbing job, so we had to open up the showers, fix the plumbing, and redo all the tadelakt." This set their timeline back by months.

The guest bathroom was enlarged and finished with Moroccan plaster.

Boyer added a skylight over the stairwell to bring light into the middle of the home.

In the kitchen, the couple kept the original cabinets and "beautiful, custom-rolled stainless-steel counters,” says Christine. They updated the island counter, flooring, and backsplash, adding Foro marble, Concrete Collaborative tiles, and Cle tile, respectively.

Flooded with natural light, the kitchen is set up with daily rituals in mind. An espresso machine, ceramic cups, and stereo for music bring rhythm and comfort to morning routines. “It’s how I would want to move through the morning and day,” shares Mila.

A large circular window adorns one of the home’s two bedrooms. “I was drawn to certain shapes, and wanted to see how they translate,” says Mila. “I used a lot of graph paper, and as soon as it looked proportional and right, I was like, ‘Okay, this is going to be it,’” she shares of her experimental design process.

Thick arches added to transitional spaces become a focal point in their own right. “You don't add art to the wall as much,” says Mila. “The wall is the art.”

Lye and soap-stained Douglas fir covers the floors upstairs, as well as the new staircase.

After: The new staircase in the entryway is a study of fresh minimalism. The wall-mounted handrail replaces a clunky formal banister, and the white oak steps match the new flooring throughout the home.
