Built-in wood shelving under the television has an opening for the plant pot.

The main space opens up entirely—visually and literally—toward the Pacific Ocean. It’s clad in large sliding windows that connect the interior spaces to the outdoors.

Carlos and Whitney changed all the windows, opting for replacements made by All Weather Architectural Aluminum featuring line detailing that infuses the home with the Spanish hacienda feeling they desired. In the family room, the windows are accented by curtains from Nordic Knots.

The white brick fireplace from the original home was left intact. It’s complemented by more modern pieces like a bouclé sofa from Lulu & Georgia, a standing lamp from Lightology, and a cabinet from Ferm Living.

Living Room

Masterfully styled by acclaimed interior designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, this one-bedroom apartment is located in a classic 19th-century brownstone and blends historic architecture with chic, contemporary design.

The remodeled home appears to only be one level from the street, although an additional story is tucked below on the hillside site.

The Nine-Square House is set at the end of a long, private driveway, surrounded by trees.

After: A custom L-shaped banquette in light blue Maharam upholstery adds warmth and texture. The original marble mantel has been retrofitted with an electric fireplace.

“There’s confusion that the more expensive the design is, the more of a luxury it is. But expensive materials do not make the design,” Edna says.

The spacious living room is fitted with large picture windows and floor-to-ceiling shelving.
