This High-Tech Marina Del Rey Penthouse Condo Heightens The Definition Of Minimal Design
Thanks to new technology, homes are getting smarter and more convenient. No one knows this better than LA developer and owner of LA Design Build, Armin Missaghi, who typically likes to incorporate new technology in many of his upscale renovations. When he and his team were commissioned to renovate an entire Marina Del Rey, CA, condo, he walked in and looked at the already contemporary interior and envisioned a space that featured some of his favorite technological home additions mixed with a modern and clean look.
The condo is on the 20th floor, providing impeccable views of the marina outside, so the interior views needed to be just as impressive. Because the clients wanted to do a lot of entertaining, the first priority was the redesign of the kitchen. To create the “European modern” look that was requested, LA Design Build went with a custom-fabricated Vadara island, featuring a waterfall effect for the entire piece, induction cooktop and recirculating downdraft vent for a seamless and futuristic cooking experience. The no-burn induction stove makes preparing meals safe and convenient as heat is only emitted once the stove senses pots and pans.
The waterfall island (benefiting from the same marble quartz from the counters) helps create an open living effect as it blends the kitchen and dining area of the condo, making an elegant design statement. The island is now a sculptural piece of art that complements the modern, sleek and high-end look of the entire condo.
The Tower (“T”) Miele appliance design (which includes a coffee maker, steam oven, convection oven and microwave) right behind the Vadara island harmoniously blends into the back wall of the kitchen as it’s surrounded by hidden cabinets that feature a push latch feature as a way to follow the minimal look of the rest of the kitchen. The touchless faucet and sink sits on white oak lacquer cabinets, which add a fresh style element against the all-white kitchen landscape.
The column that separates the kitchen from the dining area features Knife Edge linear lights, with adjustable gimbals and further enforces the modern design of the kitchen. The custom wine fridge seen as soon as you walk through the front door features dual temperature functionality, chilling two different wines at different temperatures. The kitchen and dining room are brightly lit thanks to recessed cove LEDs. For a suspended wall look, the design team went with Fry Reglet architectural drywall that eliminates the need for baseboards.
Moving into the living room, a custom-hand cut bronze mirror large in a mosaic format provides a neutral tonality to the space while also adding fluid motion as you enter the home. The mirrors are composed of 18 different sized rectangles for an eye worthy design.
The master bedroom and bath features more technological home improvements, such as the privacy glass that separates the space from the bathroom. The team mentions he likes to add this type of glass to open up smaller spaces so that they appear larger. The glass partition closest to the Kohler Veil toilet and bidet will darken once it senses movement for added privacy and then becomes transparent again thanks to a motion sensor.
The shower features huge Porcelanosa over-sized tile slabs in a marble design for a luxury feel, while the LED rain shower with thermostatic valve eliminates the need for shower fixture. The Infinity linear drain adds to the seamless appearance of the shower floor and improves drainage. The sink features wall-mounted GROHE faucets for an aesthetically modern look and more counter space. Robern lighted medicine cabinets flow with the minimalist design of the entire condo and enhance the space with the best lighting in its class.
Each of the bedrooms have electric Lutron motorized roller shades with black-out drapes that are programmable to open and close at desired times, eliminating the needs for traditional blinds or drapes. The custom-tile master bedroom headboard with 3D tiles acts as the room’s focal point, while bespoke floating nightstands add to the room’s overall appeal.
Since the powder room is one of the most frequented rooms of the condo when guests are over, LA Design Build made sure to place close attention to the design, adding leather-like wall paper and specifically running the lines horizontally to make the space appear larger.
