Ways to Design with Heath Tiles

For over half a century, California's Heath Ceramics has been turning out coarse, colorful stoneware tiles. We've shared our love for Heath's artistry before through our Dwell Patterns collaboration. Now, we celebrate seven homes that integrate Heath's lovingly-crafted tiles into their kitchens and bathrooms.

The kitchen and Baker's home office, which has artwork and inspiration pinned above the desk, are aligned behind sliding fiberglass-and-bamboo shoji screens. Devoid of cabinetry, the kitchen is fitted out with industrial cantilevered shelving from E-Z Shelving Systems in Kansas City. The red tiles behind the stove are from Heath Ceramics.

The kitchen cabinetry echoes the new blue ceiling. The brick tile is from Heath Ceramics, as is the dinnerware. Behind the Viking stove is powder-coated corrugated metal (“Very trailer,” says the designer). The refrigerator is from Big Chill. On the table is a bowl by Victoria Morris.

The Ellers wanted their main bathroom to be lined with tiles but the expense was a limiting factor. To overcome this, Katie made frequent trips across the Golden Gate Bridge to Heath Ceramics in Sausalito to purchase seconds. "She collected boxes and boxes over time, and then we arranged what she had in this pattern," Willmer says.
