In the heart of Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, a charming storybook ranch built in 1954 underwent a remarkable transformation, blending vintage charm with modern chic. With a vision to create a space that reflected the young, stylish attorneys who call it home, Valerie Helgeson, principal designer and founder of Oklahoma City-based Design Directions set out to revamp the kitchen and living areas while maintaining the home's original character.
The original kitchen, almost frozen in time since 1954, became the focal point of the renovation. The clients desired a chic urban feel that would harmonize with their vibrant lifestyle and the evolving neighborhood. Their request for two islands posed a spatial challenge, but careful planning ensured that functionality and style were not compromised.
To achieve the desired aesthetic, Helgeson opted for a dramatic look that would suit the family's needs: Black shaker cabinets, dark ebony stained oak floors, and pure white quartz countertops and backsplashes. Brass Visual Comfort fixtures and Brizo plumbing fixtures in brass and matte black added a touch of luxury. Black grass cloth wallpaper in the entry, wainscoting in the living room, and geometric tile in the hall bath complement the overall design scheme.
The home's fragmented layout and multiple flooring materials presented significant challenges. By widening doorways and removing walls, Helgeson improved the flow between rooms while maintaining their individuality. Addressing the flooring height discrepancy required installing new floor joists to level the surfaces.
One of the project's highlights was the decision to forego upper cabinets along one kitchen wall. Instead, full slabs of quartz were used from counter to ceiling, creating a visually striking and spacious atmosphere. The inclusion of two islands and carefully selected fixtures added both functionality and style.
A common mistake in kitchen design is overcrowding with cabinets. By daring to be different and breaking traditional design rules, the team created a kitchen that not only met the client's storage needs but also became a standout feature of the home.
For Helgeson, the kitchen stands out as the crowning achievement of the renovation. Despite initial doubts about the feasibility of two islands, the end result is a testament to innovative design and meticulous planning. Today the hub of this home offers a harmonious blend of timeless charm and contemporary elegance.
